Reigning on the Parade
Summary:
Frank Whelan is a features writer for the Allentown, Pennsylvania, Morning call. In 2006 Whelan and his partner of 25 years, Bob Wittman, participated in a gay rights parade in June. The problem is that the newspaper Whelan works for prohibits employees from taking part in "public demonstrations in favor or opposed to a cause." Thee editors of newspaper say that Whelan never got permission to participate in the parade and they did not find out that he did until seeing the press release. The Call editors did warn Whelan about the consequences of participating before but he said his and Wittman's participation in the parade was a representation of their long-term relationship. so the question is what the consequences should be for Whelan.
My Opinion:
In my opinion, what Whelam did is against the newspapers rules and that should come with consequences. The other side is that he is gay and was going to a event supporting that. People believe since it has something to due with his sexuality that he should not have gotten in trouble. My argument is that being part of the LGBTQ plus community is all about being included and being treated the same as straight person. Something that comes with that is following the rules. He works for the newspaper so like every employee, when going against the rules he should have consequences. I believe Whelam overreacted and had no reason to try and sue the company.
Naming Victims of Sex CrimesSummary: Many children, boys and girls, are victims of abductions and sex crimes everyday. From this, thousands of stories and reports are made every day about these kids. Management, editors, reporters and other decision makers in these cases have to make the decision to tell the whole story and maybe causing further harm to already-victimized minors. They are under the pressure of beating other news stories to the story, the families of the victims, the public and the fast accessibility to stories. The question is, Should children who are thought to be the victims of sexual abuse ever be named in the media? And other questions around that topic.
My Opinion: In my opinion, victims of sexual abuse, minor or not, should not be named in reports or papers unless given permission by the victim or the family. Sexual abuse is something that can affect not only the victim but the community around them. It is a topic that should no be taken lightly and talking about what happened can further damage the victim. It can also put further harm towards the victim. Now the public know who you are and the traumatic thing you have gone through. Using someones name and story, I believe, is a violation of your given rights. No news story or publicity is worth using someone else's name a story without their permission first.
Offensive Images Summary:In September 2005, caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad were first published and did not cause much of a commotion. But when published again in early 2006, after Muslim leaders called attention to the images, it set or many riots through the Islamic world. After rioting and killing happened, it was hard to ignore the cartoons. Some media did not want to print them to not cause any more protests or attacks. Other media wanted to show the truth and not be scared of the Islamist fundamentalists. The question is, do we publish the cartoons or not?
My Opinion: In my opinion, we should publish the cartoons. You have to be brave and show people what is really going on in the world. But on the other hand by publishing the cartoons, a lot of damage can happen. I'm stuck on if shielding information from the public is better or worse for society.
